"When are you interviewing the band?" a message reads. "I was hoping to ask if I can join as their extra sister."

However, there remains a key snag: The sender also desires to be the Haims' fourth member. And we're not alone. Several celebrated fans have openly petitioned for the role.

The evidence suggests a special quality is at play. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana began their career playing gigs at local delicatessens with their family. Presently, they stand as multiple Grammy hopefuls.

Similar to the greatest groups, they're a inseparable gang. Their videos frequently feature them striding in unison down the streets of Los Angeles. During performances, they jam with such pure exuberance you can't help but think, "I'd love to be a piece of that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that audience members approached us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I bought a drum kit'," says Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "It is the ultimate compliment. That's an award in itself. We've done our job if we can inspire young girls to make music."

"So all gets an invitation to be the next member of Haim."

Award Recognition

The trio are connecting from a break, where they're recovering after an major tour in support of their fourth album, I Quit.

They're currently reeling from the news it's been shortlisted for a top rock honor at the Grammys – with Haim the first all-female band ever in the running for the award.

"I tune into the lists every year, so it kind of feels like The Truman Show when your name is called," explains Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this right or am I imagining things'?"

The importance of the honor is deeply felt by the band.

"We really set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a huge milestone," continues Alana. "But we're just thankful for the female artists that came before us."

Heartbreak and Humour

The project emerged from a phase of transition. All three sisters ended up single, and the music inhabits that unique liminal space where you're happy to be free, but not entirely ready to move on.

The words detail departures and goodbyes. The sisters seek love, but not the specific love they've had. You can hear them figuring out in real time who they aspire to be.

"That's a perfect description, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is like a slogan. You have to consciously practice blocking the criticism and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Development of Style

That recent confidence required a new sound – more organic and direct than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that started with the percussion.

"The drum sound is such a nuanced thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our biography," jokes Alana. "I've said it, our albums won't commence until we find the perfect drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Laughter

The trio's honesty fueled the album's marketing, where the sisters revealed some of their dating tales.

One man left Este over a health consideration. Alana told a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"Experiencing these breakups, you just feel like there's no hope," explains Alana. "So to be able to share those stories and have them tell you more outrageous stories, it's incredible."

An Assured Future

It's not difficult sense a evolution in the band. Today, Haim are more confident of their position in the music world.

They're top-billed acts, with chart-topping albums and an worldwide audience.

But Haim will consistently be their number one commitment.

"We have been making music since I was a young child," says Alana. "There is no alternative that we were meant to do. And I'm really grateful we've made it and we're still making music."
