Federal Reserve Reduces Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The US monetary authority cut interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second reduction in the current year amid economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Changes

In a announcement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement notes. “Price increases has risen and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed usually studies labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, such as the number of employment gains created to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of positions created to the economy in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was set to release September’s employment data in early October, it halted its publication when the closure began. Employment data company ADP indicated recently that the business segment eliminated 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, a trend he had previously attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Reveals Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that showed that costs are rising, although gradually. Prices increased three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target price increase is 2%.
